Workshop: Manager as a coach - basic coaching skills, which you can use in team management

Managers are not able to be proper coaches with their employees. However, leaders can use coaching skills to make their management style more participative and engaged. The coaching management style allows people to have more autonomy and independence. This training will help you understand what coaching means and will show you how to use it in your team management practice.

A manager's formal position is not enough to have authority among team members. Leaders should build their position within the group and gain the followership of their workers. For this purpose, they need flexibility in management styles. Managers are not able to be proper coaches with their employees. However, leaders can use coaching skills to make their management style more participative and engaged. The coaching management style allows people to have more autonomy and independence. This training will help you understand what coaching means and will show you how to use it in your team management practice.

Training goals

At the end of this training:

  • you will understand the main features of the coaching approach;
  • you will learn a few coaching tools, and you will be able to use them in a conversation with a member of your team;
  • you will know when you can use coaching in team management.

Training agenda

  1. What does coaching mean? Definition and fundamental features of the coaching approach.
  2. What are the differences between coaching and management?
  3. Coaching tools, which you can use. Open-ended questions and Structure of 5 questions
  4. When coaching could be needed? Context of using coaching in work with a team

​​The training is workshop-like and involves all participants. You will experience simulations, small group work, forum discussions, and mutual feedback about exercises. Your self-presentation, information about your training needs, and active participation would also be needed. Therefore, you need not only passive but also active English skills. (Minimum suggested level: B2) 

Trainer - Maciej Kocurek

He completed postgraduate studies in Human Resources Management from Tischner European University. He graduated from “Train the Trainer School” and “School of Facilitators” from Wszechnica UJ as well as “The Art and Science of Coaching” and “Trainers Training” from Erickson Caching International. In the years 2010-2023 CEO of Wszechnica UJ.

He specializes in training that develops managerial skills, in particular, related to shaping an engaging leadership style and implementing changes in organizations. Conducting training he refers to his managerial experience, both in operational and strategic levels. He leads mentoring processes for managers. He was responsible for consulting projects about shaping organizational culture and implementing changes.

He was a leader of the team, that designed the project of Lesser Poland`s Standards for Educational and Training Services (LSETS), manager of the training companies pilot audit, based on the LSETS quality criteria, co-author of the “Guide to Standards”, where he wrote a chapter about the management of training company.

Co-author of research reports: “Organization in the Adolescence. What organizational culture do employees expect?”; “Organization at the crossroads. Visions of the future of the organization”; “Future scenarios. Engaging employees in strategic dialogue about the future.”

His previous and current clients include Future Processing, Pratt & Whitney, Scanfil Poland, BZWBK, BGŻ, Polsat Cyfrowy, Puma, Impel S.A., 3M Poland, Aviva, International Paper, SKANSKA, Smyk.
