Student work placement at the JU Careers Service

Jagiellonian University students are welcome to do work placement in our Careers Service. It is a perfect opportunity to gain work experience and get familiar with the job market. Faculty Ambassadors of the Careers Service cooperate with us by disseminating information about us at their faculties.

Those willing to cooperate with the JU Careers Service are advised to regularly visit our website, where the information about recruitment is published.

Every three months, students can do work placement in the Careers Service. Their major engagement is in the areas of information and training. The project, started in December 2002, enables students to gain work experience, which is so much valued by prospective employers.

Students' opinions

Below you can read some opinions from the students who have done their work placement at the JU Careers Service.

"JU Careers Service was the place where I gained my first professional experience, developed skills indispensible for team work, and made some valuable contacts.

During the work placement I taught one of the first courses in my life. It was a part of a series of workshops for the members of the Youth Town Council of Rabka Zdrój and some volunteers from the JU Office for Students Affairs. I can recall the emotions that accompanied my preparing and teaching the courses, as well as what I felt when the projects were being evaluated and I received t feedback from the participants for the first time. This experience made me aware of the importance of a thorough preparation of the course, and also taught me that the course does not finish when the instructor leaves the classroom, but only after a careful evaluation has taken place.

In the Careers Service I gained my first experience in teaching courses. Now, as an instructor, I can clearly see how these first, positive experiences have helped me reinforce my ideas of what I want to do in the future and have encouraged me to pursue a specific career path."

"My work placement in the JU Careers Service was my first professional experience that had to do with personnel consultancy, the job market and young people who are just about to assume a new role of job seekers.
During my work placement I had a lot of contact with companies seeking staff and with students seeking jobs. There was plenty of information about keys to a successful job interview. Thanks to this experience, I learnt much about how to write job offer ads, how to prepare application documents and how to prepare for an interview. I also had a chance to pass this knowledge on during the workshops and training sessions for students, thanks to which I gained my first experience as an instructor.

This first professional experience helped me decide whether to choose personnel consultancy and human resources as my career. Furthermore, the placement taught me to be self-reliant and actively make choices concerning my professional future."

"The work placement in the Careers Service was a very pleasant experience: a friendly atmosphere, very helpful workmates, contact with a multitude of job, internship and work placement offers. In brief, it was worth doing."

The placement has made me aware what office work looks like; by the way, I currently work in an office. After the placement I knew for certain that I could take this kind of job.

It's difficult to say whether the placement in the Careers Service has helped me in my career. It probably has, at least to some extent. It is listed in my CV and I was often asked about this experience during my interviews. Every work placement is an invaluable professional experience. Otherwise your first work experience would be the "graduate internship," that is doing boring tasks for 3 months, 8 hours a day."

"I have very fond memories of my work placement in the JU Careers Service. My colleagues were very friendly towards me and helped me in solving some problems. The placement was well planned and my duties were clearly defined, which contributed to a good organization of work.

The placement has taught me what is important during a job interview, what a good CV should be like and what should be avoided so that you look competent and self-confident in the eyes of a prospective employer.
I found a job and work placement offer thanks to the Careers Service website."

"My memories of the work placement are very warm, mainly due to the great atmosphere in the office. This was largely dues to the head of the Careers Service, Agnieszka Dudziak. One major advantage of the placement was the chance I had to prove myself in doing many different tasks and focus on the aspects that I found most interesting. It was also good to know that our work was appreciated and important for the Careers Service.

Thanks to the understanding attitude of the Careers Service staff, I could successfully combine work placement with studying.

Work placement in the Careers Service bridges the gap between higher education and the first job. It enables participants to gain practical knowledge, which is impossible to acquire at the university, but is very important for any prospective employer. The placement makes you familiar with the job market and its mechanisms as well as with the employers' expectations. It also shows the role of information flow and cooperation between the worlds of business and academia.

Cheers to all the staff!"

Dorota

"My work placement in the JU Careers Service was my first job experience and a very pleasant one. The staff were very friendly and helpful. You could learn what office work looks like.

During my work placement I learnt to prepare and co-teach courses and to work in team. In Careers Service I acquired useful knowledge about the job searching process, the interview, writing the application documents and the job market in Poland in general. I could take part in the courses on these issues and in the meetings with employers. The valuable information I gained couldn't be learnt anywhere else.

This work placement is a valuable entry in your CV. It is a good way to start your career in human resources. It made my job hunt a few months later much easier. I knew where and how I should look for job and felt well prepared to the interview.

I would like to send my greetings to the whole Careers Service staff and especially the ladies I met during my work placement."
